One more thing to keep in mind!
One of the serious risk factors for heart disease and other complications of atherosclerosis is our attitude. People with tense and negative personalities get ill more often than people who have a more relaxed and happy attitude to life.35 Why does that happen? Because every emotion creates a certain biochemistry in the body, and not just in your brain but everywhere else. Negative emotions create negative biochemistry, leading to disease. Positive emotions create positive biochemistry, leading to healing and recovery.
A few simple rules will help you to stay positive and hence create a positive biochemistry in your body.
1. Work to live, do not live to work! Workaholics are much more prone to heart attacks than people who keep their work in perspective. There are far more important things in life than earning money.
2. Remember what the little rabbit, called Thumper, said in the Disney film Bambi, “If you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all!” Criticising other people and saying negative things about others will alter your own biochemistry and damage your own health.
3. Be positive! Concentrate on positive things in life, on your blessings, on your dreams, on the good qualities of people around you, on your own good qualities – and your life will become much happier as a result. That will create good biochemistry in your body. Concentrating on problems and bad things in life will poison your life and your biochemistry, bringing a disease with them.
4. Laughing can be extremely powerful in treating any disease. Actively create situations in life when you can laugh. Avoid situations that make you miserable. Seek the company of people who make you feel good and happy and avoid people who make you feel bad and low. Life is too short to spend it in bad company! If it is your own company you enjoy the most, then create time for doing just that and make it happy.
5. Don’t bottle up your feelings! Find a safe outlet for your anger, frustration and other destructive feelings. Don’t hide grief; the more you share it with others the quicker it will leave you. Accumulated bad feelings destroy us from the inside.
6. Be honest with yourself and others. If your conscience is not clear, your biochemistry will be in a self-destructive mode and you will create a disease in your body out of nowhere.
7. Every single day organise yourself to do something that you really enjoy. Do it just for yourself. In doing that you will show yourself respect and love and that will create very positive, healing biochemistry in your body.
I would like to summarise with the words of the late Professor Christiaan Barnard, the world’s most respected heart surgeon, who performed the world’s first heart transplant operation: “I promise you: look after your soul and you will reduce your chances of a heart attack”.35
